Interior wall design

Interior wall design

Interior wall design
The functional interior wall is a spectacular design piece and a light screener.

The modern design of these wall units are based on vertically layered birch plywood stripes that together create an eye-catching three dimensional curved surface. Light pours through the gaps between the plywood stripes, allowing the wall to act as a light screener when installed in front of a window or a light source. Together these features melt in a spectacular design of a coherent wavy surface that continues through the entire corridor and varies based on the viewpoint of the viewer.

The design is fully customizable and individualised. The wall is done implementing generative algorithms, which allow an easy and flexible design. Changes in the design parameters (such as plywood dimensions and surface appearance) can be implemented very quickly and the information for manufacturing is generated automatically. So,the wall is not just a one-of piece of design, but also a fully customizable product.

Light design

Light design

Cardboard light design
The overall form was designed usign genetic algorithms to find an aesthetic form and to find the mass center for the balance. The light is manufactured using laser cut 6mm cardboard sheets and then glued together to form the unique structure of the light.

This light design and manufacturing process can be easily reproduced in a way that every individual light is unique in its form.

Exhibition furniture

Exhibition furniture

Exhibition furniture for Liminganlahti Visitor Centre’s exhibition
The exhibition furniture are plywood constructions for the exhibition ‘The eight seasons of a bird´s year’ at the Liminka Bay Visitor Center. The exhibition design was made by architectural office EST for Finnish Metsähallitus. The furnitures was designed and developed by Toni Österlund in collaboration with architectural office EST.

The furniture are CNC-milled 24mm lacquered plywood. The individual milled plywood pieces fit together by the corresponding notches on the horizontal and vertical pieces, making it an interlacing structure. The structure and element joining techniques are innovative constructions developed just for this purpose.

The furniture forms were designed using T-Splines and the structure was made using Grasshopper, both design plugins for Rhino3D. All the joints and individual plywood pieces were generated using custom made algorithms and the resulting 3D model holds all the information needed for CNC-milling.

Renovation of a small kitchen

Renovation of a small kitchen

Renovation of a small kitchen
Kitchen renovation project of a small residential kitchen.

The original kitchen design was rather gloomy and dark. The refrigerator unit was situated against the living room wall, which made the visual connection between the kitchen and the living room very narrow. This made the small kitchen to appear even smaller. By re-arranging the order of the appliances and by opening a half section of the living room wall, helped to compensate for the tightness of the space. This effect was further enhanced by using light coloured materials and a simple streamlined design.

The design of this kitchen tries to minimize all visual clutter and pointy angles by introducing a concept, where the kitchen countertop is seemingly carved out of the Finnish birch tree, revealing its white inside. The functionality of the kitchen is increased by adding built-in paper roll dispenser and a hidden knife rack with magnetic holders. The paper dispenser is easy to operate with just one hand and offers a convenient, yet stylish way to dispense papers – something that is very much appreciated in a family with a small baby. There is also an integrated stepping stool, with a thickness of only 38mm when folded.

Materials and suppliers:

The counter top is 12mm white compact laminate by Formica and the backsplash is made of white laminated 6mm birch plywood. Cabinet frames are of 16mm white melamine chipboard and the visible sides of the cabinets are of 18mm and 12mm lacquered birch plywood. The doors are birch veneer by Kustavinpuu. Integrated electronic appliances are by Electrolux. The cooker hood, LED lights, stepping stool and integrated electric outlet are by Savo Design & Technic. Faucet is by Graana and sink is by Ikea.

The kitchen was manufactured and assembled by Puutyöliike Mikko Ojanen Oy.

Table design

Table design

Dining table design

Simple and elegant dining room table that seat 4 people for a private residence.

The design is simple and aery, implemented with a minimal amount of integral components needed in order to make it functional. The table top holds its own weight and need no additional support structure in the middle. As such, the lower surface of the top is clean and free of any parts that one might only find with their knees. The surface is supported by the circular leg assemblies. The only attachment and support point for the table top are the notches on the top parts of the legs. The top is attached to the legs with four screws in total.

Materials:

The table top is made of 12mm white compact laminate. The legs of the table are 18mm lacquered birch plywood.
